What is the purpose of a leap year? Well, it takes the Earth a bit more than 365 days to orbit the sun — 5 hours, 48 minutes and 46 seconds longer — so in order to avoid throwing off the calendar, an extra day is added every four years to use up the extra hours. Julius Caesar's astronomer, Sosigenes, came up with this solution, which was later named "leap year" by Pope Gregory XIII.
